Decluttering is your first step towards an organised home. But how do you start and when do you know that the job is done?
Here we share our favourite tips, tricks, and advice for decluttering your home and keeping it that way.
Don’t wait for the time to be right
Just like starting a new exercise regime, there is no time like the present to start sorting your home. Decluttering – depending on the state of your home – can be a lengthy process, which is why we recommend getting started right away!
Consider the 12-month rule
For those who are new to decluttering, removing old clothes, sentimental gifts, or everyday items from your home can be confronting – which is where the 12-month rule steps in.
What this means is asking yourself if you have used each item in the previous 12-months. If you can’t remember the last time you used (or wore) it – it’s time for it to go.
Keep flat surfaces clear
Coffee tables, shelves, and counter tops are breeding grounds for clutter. By keeping flat surfaces clear you’re also reducing the amount of clutter within your home. What a win-win.
Ensure everything has a place
Decluttering only works if everything you own has a home. Ensure that each item within your home has a place and that it is put away after each use or at the end of each day – depending on what the item is.
This may take some time to get used to, but you’ll thank yourself in the long run when you can find everything you need, when you need it.
Make your bed everyday
A simple step but a goodie! Get into the habit of making your bed each morning. While this may not be a decluttering step per se – the flow on effect of taking care of your environment will be seen in other areas of your home. For example, once your bed is made, you’ll generally feel more inclined to place your dishes in the dishwasher or put away your laundry.
Be realistic about your goals
You may go into this process thinking you’ll overhaul your entire home in one afternoon. However, we cannot stress the importance of being realistic with your goals. Decluttering takes time and it pays to recognise this.
You may benefit from breaking down your goals into smaller achievable chunks. This will help you feel like you’re making progress when the task is large – and keep you motivated!
