Dishwasher Hacks

Dishwashers sure make life easy. After a big meal it’s simply a quick rinse for the dishes and into the dishwasher they go.

But did you know you can clean other items in the dishwasher? That it’s not solely reserved for cleaning food and grime off of your plates and glasses?

Keep reading as we discuss dishwasher hacks and other items you can let your dishwasher clean for you.

Dishwasher hack #1 – Kids toys

Small plastic toys can be put through the dishwasher to sanitise and clean them. Ensure you don’t include any electronic or battery operated toys and you’re good to go.

Dishwasher hack #2 – Dish racks

We often forget that the humble disk rack used to dry our dishes can be home to bacteria and grime. Place it on the bottom rungs for a thorough clean.

Dishwasher hack #3 – Scrubbing brushes

If you have scrubbing brushes for cleaning your home, chances are they’re in need of a wash themselves. You can also include hairbrushes and make up brushes in the utensil holder, just make sure any hair is removed so you don’t risk clogging up the drain.

Dishwasher hack #4 – Contact lens case

People who wear contact lenses understand the perils of a dirty case.  Bacteria and dirt can be easily transferred to your eye from the case when you put the lenses in of a morning. A quick run through the dishwasher leaves your case sanitised.

Dishwasher hack #5 – Refrigerator shelves

If you can fit your refrigerator shelves into your dishwasher, consider including them in a cycle. We often forget how grubby they can become and the dishwasher is a quick way to get them sparkling again.

Dishwasher hack #6 – Keys

Who really knows what touches their keys these days. We sure don’t. Metal keys can be washed as often as you like, keeping them safe and sanitised for when your kids inevitably start playing with them.

Dishwasher hack #7 – Cleaning the dishwasher

Finally remember to give your dishwasher itself a clean every once in a while. This can be done by taking out the dishwasher filter and soaking it in clean soapy water for ten minutes. Replace the filter and pour a cup of white vinegar into the bottom of your dishwasher and wash on a heavy cycle.

After the cycle has run, sprinkle baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher and leave to rest overnight. In the morning, run another heavy cycle and your dishwasher will be back to new again! How easy is that?
