Defrosting a freezer is an arduous task and one that most people would rather avoid. But alas, it’s a task that needs to be done.
Here we’ve simplified the process into 7 easy steps.
Step 1 – Turn off the freezer
Your freezer may have a switch inside to turn it off, or you may need to manually unplug your freezer from the wall socket.
Step 2 – Remove all food from the freezer
This should be a no brainer. Take all frozen food out of the freezer and store in a cooler bag or esky. Place the cooler bag into the coolest and darkest part of your home to prevent the food from spoiling.
Step 3 – Remove shelves and drawers
Along with defrosting your freezer it’s important to give the inside parts and good thorough clean. Simply remove shelved and drawers before you begin defrosting. After they have come to room temperature give them a wash with soap and water.
Step 4 - Decide on your method for defrosting
There are a number of ways to defrost the built up ice inside your freezer.
A tried and tested method is to boil a pot of water, place it within the freezer and shut the door. The heat from the boiled water will heat the inside of the freezer and start the process of melting built up ice. Only leave the door closed for five minutes.
Alternatively, you can simply wait for the ice to melt naturally or send hot air onto the ice with a hairdryer. If you choose the hairdryer method, ensure you keep the cord away from water.
Remember to avoid mess by lining the floor in front and slightly beneath the freezer with newspapers and towels. This will soak up the water as it drains from the freezer.
Step 5 – Wipe away the ice
Try and wipe away the ice as it melts with a cloth or soft spatula. Don’t get too excited and hack away at the ice with a sharp object; doing this can damage the inside of your freezer.
Step 6 – Clean up excess water and wipe dry
After all the ice is removed from the freezer it’s time to mop up the excess water and give your freezer a thorough wipe dry. It’s important to have your freezer as dry as possible to prevent ice from building up quickly when it is turned back on.
Step 7 – Replace your shelves, food and enjoy!
Finally, replace your freezer shelves, drawers and frozen food.
