Smart Laundry Stain Removers

Smart laundry stain removers are everywhere, if you know where to look. So don’t let your clothes get discarded because of a small (or large) stain. 

Keep reading for common stains and our ways to remove them. 

Chewing gum - apply ice to the stain and allow it to harden, then scrape clean with a butter knife before washing. 

Blood – for fresh stains soak the item in cold water and then wash as normal. Don’t use hot water for fresh blood stains as it will set the stain. 

For dried stains soak in warm water and then wash with a laundry product that contains enzymes. Enzymes cause a chemical reaction that works to break down stains and dirt. Most laundry detergents list whether they contain enzymes or not. 

Chocolate – as soon as the chocolate is dropped, wipe off any excess that may remain on the item of clothing and soak it in cool water.  Spray the item with a prewash stain treatment and check the label before laundering in the hottest water possible. If the stain doesn’t budge, rewash the item with a bleach that’s fabric safe. 

Water based paint – soak the item in warm water while the stains are still wet and then wash as usual. It’s good to remember with paint that once the stains are dry you cannot remove them, so acting fast is a must!

Perspiration – Rub the stain with a traditional bar of soap. If the perspiration has changed the colour of the fabric you can apply white vinegar the stain at this stage, before washing the item in the hottest water the fabric will allow. 

Wine – sponge the stain with cold water or allow to soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Spray the item with a prewash stain remover and wash directed by the clothing label. If the fabric allows for it, add some laundry bleach to the water. 

Heavy grease/oil – place the clothing stain face down on a pile of paper towels and apply cleaning liquid to the back of the stain. Make sure you replace the paper towels beneath the stain frequently. Allow the item to dry and then rinse. Finally launder the item in the hottest water the fabric will allow.
