Cull unnecessary clothing
It can be hard to get rid of your children’s beloved clothing. You may remember their life milestones – such as their first step - by the clothes they were wearing. You may be attached to their little onesies or holding out hope for another child.
No matter the circumstance, there are always clothes to cull.
Get yourself a couple of garbage bags and start sorting. Clothes that are stained, torn or in poor condition can be thrown out. If you are not planning on having more children, consider donating good quality items to friends, family or charity. Once you’ve narrowed down your selection, it’s time to get the remaining children’s clothing sorted.
Wash before storing
The first step is to wash all clothes that are intended for storage. This applied for cloth nappies, blankets, towels etc. You don’t want to store dirty items. Not only will it risk ruining other clothes but it makes for extra work in the long run.
Decide upon your storage option
The two main options for keeping your children’s clothes sorted are using vacuum bags, or large air tight plastic containers.
Your decision may depend on the storage space available and also comes down to personal preference. The choice is yours.
Ensure your storage area is clean and dry
Clothing needs to be stored in a clean and dry environment. Dampness can create bacteria and you risk creating mildew spots on your clothing. Additionally, ensure that the clothes are 100% dry before placing into storage.
Pack by size and gender
After deciding on your storage item it’s time to sort and pack the clothing away. A good idea is to sort by size. A general rule is to break clothing down into three-month age brackets; 0-3 months; 3-6 months; 6-12 months; etc. You can also separate by gender if you wish before placing the clothing into storage.
Don’t forget what is stored away!
Finally, it’s important to remember that you placed clothes in storage! If you find yourself running to the shops to buy new items instead of utilising those in storage, consider keeping reminder notes inside your children’s clothing drawers.
